Dear Tom,

We are successfully using QODBC (v7) with Microsoft Access (Windows XP) to extract Quickbooks data from several Quickbooks files, all located on one computer.

I would like to take advantage of QODBCUPD to update the .opt file before connecting to Quickbooks using QODBC via my Access db.

I have a problem with authorization at automatic login. QODBC connects to Quickbooks via my Access db, but then I am not authorized to connect using QODBCUPD. I remove the authorization and re-authorize FlexQuarters to login to Quickbooks running QODBCUPD. But then QODBC is no longer authorized to connect.

Is there a limitation that only one of QODBC or QODBCUPD can login to the same Quickbooks file, that each requires its own authorization?

I am using the same system DSN for QODBC to link the tables in my Access db as well as to pass on to QODBCUPD.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

First of all, there's no reason to use QODBCUPD in the first place. For MS Access 2003 or 2007 to work correctly you must first check that you are running QODBC v8.0.0.240 or higher (see: How can I get the latest version of QODBC? ) and then change your optimization settings to use the The start of every new connection (with "Load Updated Data" first) option and confirm that the Multi-Table Sync option has been disabled. If not, uncheck the Multi-Table Sync option as this is often defaulted on (checked) with QuickBooks Enterprise and the QODBC Enterprise Desktop Edition.

Once this has been done, unlink all the QODBC tables in your existing MS Access .mdb(s) and then relink them to use these new connection settings. When you now use MS Access, any QODBC table you open in MS Access will automatically be updated, just like QODBCUPD does for that session.

For the complete details of all the QODBC optimizer settings, see: How do I setup the QODBC Optimizer? Where are the Optimizer options?

The version that I am using is 9.00.00.259 and not 7 as I first indicated.

The reason I want to use QODBCUPD is in reference to your suggestion in a post called 'How do I setup the QODBC Optimizer? (post ID 214). In this post you are suggesting to to use the feature of reading the Quickbooks data and update the opt file using QODBCUPD or QODBCFUL running it from the Command prompt. The update of the .opt file can be done let's say during the night. Then read the data into Access from the .opt file (NOSYNC).

I did a benchmark test, and QODBCUPD reads the data in half the amount of time compared to the same procedure running QODBC from Access. I guess the speed is partly due to computer has one less program to keep track of.

So back to my original question assuming that I do want to use the QODBCUPD feature, why is it that I loose the authorization? I did relink my linked tables in Access, but that does not seem to solve the issue.

First of all, stop removing the authorizations for the FLEXquarters QODBC integarted applications. MS Access has a digital certificate and it creates a seperate and different authorization to the one created using QODBCUPD. It's not uncommon to have two or four FLEXquaters QODBC authorizations in the QuickBooks Integration Applications panel. When using QODBCUPD make sure that the MS Access application is closed at the time.
